v
Mentoring is
a proven practice by which a Big Brother can improve a
fatherless child’s opportunities for success.
v
It’s
an enriching out-of-school experience that’s provided at no cost.
v
For many Little
Brothers, a Big Brother is the first man in their lives that they can rely
on.
This is the third
year that the Rhode Island law enforcement community leads the charge in
helping Big Brothers of Rhode Island overcome financial obstacles and meet the
needs of growing numbers of fatherless boys in R.I. Chief George L. Kelley, III, Police Chief of the Pawtucket Police
Department, is general chairman for our 2008 World’s Greatest Chocolate
Chip Cookie Campaign.

It
seems like such a simple thing, but for many boys in Rhode Island who are
growing up without fathers, a positive male role model is hard to find. That's
why Big Brothers of Rhode Island, Inc. was created in 1952, to give these
boys a friend to turn to during the often turbulent years of adolescence.
Over the years thousands of boys have grown into happy and healthy men
because their Big Brothers were there to guide them.
"As our society continues to become
more complex, and youngsters more susceptible and vulnerable to negative
outside influences, the importance of Big Brothers increases.
Studies show that when compared with their peers,
boys matched with Big Brothers are less likely to experiment with drugs and
alcohol, more likely to stay in school, and feel better about their
relationships with their mother or guardian and their friends.
